Tanner, Henry Ossawa
(21 jun. 1859, Pittsburgh, Pa., EE.UU.–25 may. 1937, París, Francia).

Pintor estadounidense. Fue alumno de Thomas Eakins en la Academia de Bellas Artes de Pensilvania, donde era el único estudiante afroamericano. Se trasladó a París en 1891 y en 1894 su obra ya se exhibía en los salones anuales, donde se le otorgó una mención honrosa en 1896 por Daniel in the Lions' Den y una medalla, en 1897, por Raising of Lazarus; otra obra muy conocida es La lección de banjo. Obtuvo reconocimiento internacional y muchos premios por sus paisajes y su tratamiento de temas bíblicos. Fue ordenado caballero de la Legión de Honor en 1923, y en 1927 se convirtió en el primer afroamericano admitido como miembro titular de la National Academy of Design.
